Sustainable, responsible & functional yoga clothing

As you begin to expand your yoga journey outside the physical poses (asana) of yoga and start to take your mindfulness off of the mat and into your daily life, you might find yourself more aware of what kinds of companies and business practices you are supporting with your purchases. I know that has been a part of my own journey. Not only do I try to invest my clothing dollars in products that are made sustainably, are toxin-free, and whose companies practice environmental responsibility, but the bonus has been that the quality is often higher than cheaper pieces.

I’m currently teaching four yoga classes per week, one Lagree fitness class, and I try to take at least one class from another instructor, so I spend a lot of time in my yoga clothing. I not only practice in it, but I often end up transitioning directly from a class to preschool or elementary school pickup, or to the grocery store. I can save up longer and slowly replace my cheaper pieces with longer lasting versions.

Living Consciously Holiday Gift Guide 2014

I’ve never done a Holiday Gift Guide before, but this year I really learned about some great brands and products that I think will truly help you give (or receive) this season in a way that will help you live more consciously in 2015, so I had to share! Kids Yoga Stories – I used these books when I taught Kids Yoga and the kids LOVED them. Now there is also a set of flashcards with children doing poses to make learning the yoga poses easy for kids. I’d also recommend signing up for the weekly newsletter on this site, which comes with really neat pose sequences that you can do with your child at home.

Mama May I Shop* – An adorable boutique of handmade, sustainable toys for all ages. My kids (ages 3 and 5) absolutely LOVE telling stories to Daddy and I at night and listening to us make up stories for them with Story Starters. These handmade wooden dice have pictures printed on them in eco-friendly ink. You roll them and make up stories! They come in a metal tin with a little notebook for recording your best stories. Other toys we were interested in included play silks, Fairy Friends, and the assortment of crayon wallets!

Musical Instruments – More of a general suggestion, I wanted to include this because we recently purchased both a child’s guitar (affiliate link) and a full junior drum set (affiliate link) for our son, even though I honestly thought we were insane to do it (especially when it came to the drum set). But it hasn’t been a terrible idea, actually. I have noticed he has much better rhythm and it gives him a constructive way to use his energy. Vitamix blender (affiliate link) – Although this is more of a dream item for most people, it’s absolutely worth the price tag, in my opinion! I got mine for Mother’s Day this year (2014) and still use it every day, sometimes multiple times a day. Make your own nut milk, nut butters, soups, hummus, smoothies, and even juice with your Vitamix to avoid additives and preservatives in processed foods. The company has a lovely Instagram page and is very committed to the yoga community in particular. Bonus: the scrubs also stand in for shaving cream on legs, leaving your legs luxuriously moisturized! Two products for the price of one!

Tips for Summer Adventures: Travel or Staycations

  1. Get your car checked!
    A tune up is a good idea. Low tire pressure or dirty air filters can reduce a car’s gas mileage
  2. Save on Gas!
    Use an online calculator, like GasBuddy.com’s Trip Cost Calculator, to help you estimate how much you’ll spend on gas: use your route and your car model’s gas mileage.
    Then use Allstate’s Fuel Finder – fast, easy-to-use gas price locator can help you find low prices at nearby pumps. All the preparations add up to money that stays in your pocket.
    Go easy on the accelerator when the light turns green!
    Keep to the speed limit. Promotes safer driving and more fuel efficiency, but it also helps prevent you from getting a speeding ticket, which can put a dent in any vacation budget.
  3. Pack your roadside emergency kit
    Items to include: snacks and bottled water, plastic trash bags for wind protection and car sickness, first aid kit, cellphone and charger, flashlight and batteries, blankets, waterproof matches and/or a lighter, properly inflated spare tire, jack and lug wrench, jumper cables, signal flares, pocket knife, atlas and state/local road maps, extra quart of high-quality motor oil, hand cleaner, and paper towels.

Can’t head out of town? Plan a Staycation!

Some of the benefits? Saves time (no traffic/no security check-in lines) & saves money (no expensive plane tickets/no checked bag fees).

Get the whole family involved. Encourage everyone to write down an activity on a slip of paper and choose out of a hat.

  • Camp out in your backyard
  • Take a walking tour or hike through a local park (I recommend Trinity Audubon Center!)
  • Visit a museum or spot of cultural interest
  • Use public transportation to see the attractions (saves gas and is good for the environment!)
  • Plant a garden

Really organic rosemary kale chips from our fledgling garden

It’s been a few weeks now since we started back on our organic gardening efforts, and I’ve killed a lot of poor, defenseless seedlings since then. I have watched my dreams of tomato and basil bruschetta curl up and blow away. Fortunately, there are two plants nearly impossible to kill: rosemary and kale.

My kale hung on through the single-digit freezing, ice, and snow of the winter — with it’s leaves still green. It looks even better now that the weather has warmed, and I couldn’t wait to eat it!

The rosemary has done equally well in the past, but this year’s low winter temperatures left more than half of it brown and withered. I love my rosemary in the giant galvanized steel pot, so I had to find a way to revive it without any dangerious chemicals, keeping it safe and healthy to eat.

Here’s how it looked when we started:

The good folks at Miracle-Gro Organic Choice sent me a bag of Organic Choice potting soil and organic fertilizer, which I also noticed is sold at Target in the gardening section (in case I need more later!). I decided to give the fertilizer a try in reviving my rosemary.

My son volunteered to be my little helper. All he had to do was sprinkle the appropriate amount of fertilizer around the base of the rosemary and then water it.

We also added additional Miracle-Gro Organic Choice soil to the rosemary’s pot, which was low on soil.

We fertilized on March 27.

What a difference! I was truly surprised. I realize that fertilizer helps encourage growth, but this is really neat, right?!

Since the kale and rosemary are our only fully grown plants worthy of harvesting right now, I created a Pinterest board of Garden Recipes that contained kale and rosemary. Kale chips were one of the kids’ favorites from last year’s garden, so I found a rosemary kale chip recipe that utilized rosemary-infused olive oil. Perfect!

The chips were approved by both of my kids (3 and 4 years old)! We’ve tried the kale chips from the store in the past, but they were never fans. I think the key to getting children to grow up eating healthy, fresh foods is really to involve them in the process. They have been so excited to be participating in our gardening this year.

I haven’t given up on the rest of our garden! We have some spinach, bell pepper, lettuce, swiss chard, and strawberries that seem to be doing quite well. I am particularly hopeful about the bell peppers, and I have actually Pinned a few articles from the Miracle-Gro Learn And Grow web site that has helped me toward a successful harvest. According to this bell pepper article, last year I probably let the bell peppers get too dry. This year I have a new hose system that I am very optimistic about, and a new resolve not to get so lazy with my watering.

It’s (organic) gardening time again!

I think we’ve seen the last of our 16 degree days here in Dallas, and just this week one of our chickens started laying again! I’m so excited to be doing yoga outside and cleaning the chicken coop (ok, maybe not the coop…), that I’ve also forgotten my past failures and I’m gearing up to start another organic garden.
In fact, I’ve already planted some seeds in biodegradeable seed cups. I have actually been keeping them in our downstairs bathroom because it’s the only window with a wide ledge inaccessible to children and the cat. Classy. The seedlings need to be watered several times a day to stay moist, so at least it is convenient!
This weekend, we went on a road trip. We had the cat’s autofeeder on, a weekend tablet for the fish, and plenty of food for the chickens. But the seedlings needed constant watering. So we took them with us!

What am I planting? Right now, the seedling cups contain:
tomatoes
cucumbers
basil
bell peppers
spinach
I have more seeds for growing kale, swiss chard, and dill which will be planted directly into the ground as soon as I’m sure it won’t freeze again. There is also a bunch of rooted basil in a cup of water on my windowsill waiting to be transplanted into the ground.
I have this vision of being able to create freshly picked, organic bruschetta from my garden this year, on my own homemade bread. Yum!
Of course, it’s very important for me to keep my garden organic. Organic veggies are expensive, so if I can grow even a few, it is a great savings. And what could be more yummy than fresh organic veggies? The raised bed we built two years ago is low on soil, so I’m adding additional organic soil this year from Miracle-Gro Organic Choice before transplanting the seedlings. End of my #30daycleanse Macrobiotic eating

Macrobiotic eating for 30 days - my conclusions | Conscientious Confusion

Only 4 more days until the end of my macrobiotic eating experiment! It’s been an interesting journey. You can read more about the challenges on my Day 3 and Day 5 summaries, as well as what I learned about patience, flexibility, and living.

After nearly 30 days without sugar, gluten, yeast, meat, or dairy, here are my conclusion and takeaways (NOTE: These thoughts are my own and not representative of Miessence, Ely Organics, or any sponsor):

  • It’s scary how even someone who eats as “clean”ly as I do can be so addicted to natural added sugars. I had flu-like withdrawal symptoms for 2-3 days! Frightening that my body was so dependent on sugar.
  • Did this way of eating help my digestive and skin issues? No. I had exactly the same stomach bloating, churning, and nausea as always. My skin followed exactly the same breakout patterns it always has, actually getting worse in this last week. My digestive issues have also worsened.
  • There was no “detox flare-up” of my skin in the first 10-14 days as I was initially warned. The only detox symptoms I had were the dizziness, disorientation, and lack of energy from the sugar withdrawal the first 2-3 days.
  • I did not miss bread as much as I thought I would! I will be glad to be able to eat my homemade bread again, but skipping it for 4 weeks was doable.
  • Will I keep up this way of eating? No, not exactly. I will continue reducing my sugar intake and avoiding most dairy. I have always been vegetarian. I will probably attempt to start substituting my whole wheat bread for sprouted grain.
  • I crash at 3pm regardless of eating sugar or not. You know that myth that it’s the sugar from your midday meal that causes the 2-3pm crash in energy? Nope. I haven’t eaten sugar for 25 days now and I still get that crash every day. This was something I wasn’t expecting to disprove.
  • I was able to notice that I do crave sweets when I am either a) stressed or, b) tired. Good to know. Several times I went to bed earlier than planned just to avoid being tempted by sweets.
  • If you choose this eating plan, watch the coconut oil. Since coconut oil is the only oil I was allowed to have, and I was told to only cook things in cast iron or stainless steel pots (microwave use is discouraged), I had to use a significant amount of coconut oil just to warm things to eat. Reminder: coconut oil, regardless of its myriad health benefits, IS a saturated fat. Meaning that it increases cholesterol and negative affects your skin (breakouts). I noticed this too late and it did not help my skin situation.
  • Recommend the Miessence probiotic organic superfoods, InLiven and Fast Tract. I will look into keeping up with these. They were super gentle on my stomach and contain some amazing antioxidants. I have struggled with finding probiotics that are gentle yet effective. Most of the store brands have made me sick. These are great!
  • Would I do this again? I think I will try to make this type of cleanse a regular thing, only for a shorter period of time. A diet this restrictive makes social situations very difficult and sometimes awkward. I think 5-10 days time would be more ideal.

Teaching children to use glass containers safely

Before I actually had to keep two very high spirited human beings alive and happy 24/7, I used to be very high-and-mighty about what kinds of materials I would allow my not-yet-born children to interact with and eat from. Plastic leaches all kinds of undesirable chemicals, that was out. Paper creates a great deal of waste, is quite expensive, and is not durable at all. Aluminum or stainless steel is very nice for cups and plates but is terrible for storage since you can’t see what’s inside. What does that leave? Glass, of course!

Glass is so pretty. If you aren’t convinced, just check out the Glass Is Life Instagram account. Glass is also so sustainable — it never wears out! A glass jar can be used over and over for different purposes, for hundreds of years with no leaching. And if it breaks, you can recycle it.

Ah, yes…breakage. That’s what I hadn’t thought of back in the day before children. Back when glass baby bottles seemed like a great idea. So it turned out that I did resort to plastic a little more than I’d like, for quite a while.

There was a time when we couldn’t use any glass, because my children are strong and forceful when they fling things. Probably from newborn to about 3 years old. But suddenly, both my children are 3 and older! And I am finding that I can explain to them how to use glass safely.

Admittedly, it takes a little trial and error.

Letting them fail (and break)

One of the lessons about glass that had the biggest impact on my son was when we were at Central Market and he was walking down the aisle of glass artisan juice bottles. Well, he was kind of skipping, actually. Running his hand past all the bottles as he went…you can see where that goes. He knocked one off and it went crashing to the ground in a huge mess of juice and glass. An employee had to come clean it up. He got quite the talking-to from me.

But it made a big impression. All I have to do now when he is reaching for or holding something glass is say, “We need to be careful because that is made of what?” and he’ll say, “Glass”. “And what happens to glass when we drop it like the juice at the store?” he’ll answer, “It breaks”.

Controlled access

Unfortunately, my just-3-year-old hasn’t had the juice jar experience, so she’s a little more unpredictable around glass. Recently, we went to IKEA and they both fixated on a ceramic tea set. We told them that we would buy it for them if they could learn to be gentle with it. The tea set cost somewhere around $10-$15. It’s been a great learning tool about breakage! My daughter has broken several of the cups on the tile floor in their play area, but it has been safe because the ceramic breaks very cleanly without shards. Still, the toy is gone when that happens. By allowing her to break inexpensive things that shatter relatively harmlessly, we are teaching her about why we handle glass more carefully than plastic.

Ongoing learning

Neither of them have fully learned how to handle glass, so I make sure they aren’t alone with valuable glass items or glass that would shatter into a million little pieces. But I do let them handle glass and we talk about it each time. Here’s a little video of them helping me unpack some Le Parfait glass jars (which I hope to use soon in a DIY post).

I love how these products use essential oils to boost their effectiveness. I was already using thyme and tea tree on my skin before I started using these products, and now they are incorporated into the regime.

How does my skin feel? On the surface, it feels much smoother. The mask has really helped resurface and the balancer and moisturizer are very effective.

Unfortunately, cystic acne does continue to come up from underneath the skin. I am confident, however, that it is not the result of toxins on the surface of the skin because Miessence has no toxic ingredients in their products and I am fully confident that I am putting only pure, natural things onto my skin using this system. Patience, Flexibility, and Living

When I started my #30daycleanse, I’d been told that cleanses can be spiritual, or that there were things I’d learn about myself. I think the idea is that in the midst of intentional longing and desire, you rely on something outside yourself. For me, that is God. But there are other things I’ve learned as well.

Things have happened outside of the cleanse in the past few weeks that have perhaps sped up the thinking part.

Patience

It was so difficult for me to wait for the fog of the detox to end (3-5 days). It is sooo difficult to wait to be able to eat bread and fruit. I’ve had to wait to see the results of this eating plan, if any. I am still waiting to feel AMAZING. Where is the amazing?!

With the beginning of my kids yoga classes, I’ve had to wait to solidify my schedule as I see which locations meet minimum enrollment and which don’t. So difficult for someone with control issues.
Patience.

Flexibility

Without access to sugar or fruit, I’ve had to think differently about breakfast. Instead of daily oatmeal, I’ve had to substitute rice congee or barley. I’ve finally come up with a pretty yummy concoction of congee, barley, soaked & pureed dates cooked in apple juice and soy milk. Yum!

I was also able to attend a long-anticipated arm balance workshop this weekend at one of the studios where I practice. It was amazing! Going into the workshop with an open mind, I was able to do poses that were unimaginable before. So fun!

I might actually be slightly obsessed with balances, and frustrated often when I don’t have an opportunity to practice. I need to do them when I can, find the time.
Flexibility.

Living

The author of my particular regime emailed a reminder last week: are we eating to live or living to eat? I have actually never been someone who ate for fun. Sure, I enjoy the taste of many foods. But eating takes time and, for me, is often followed by feeling sick. So I ate to survive, not for enjoyment.

Spending the last 12 days restricted to only a few foods has made me examine why I eat. I realized that I miss flavor and variety. I miss eating a colorful array of fruits, vegetables and even breads. I don’t miss “junk food”, I miss fruit the most.

Another thing happened that reminded me to enjoy life: someone close to our family took their own life. The person was our age, so young. So many things to process, and so sad.

For this reason, we find ourselves on an unplanned quick-turnaround trip to a funeral. When you read this, we may already be back. Unfortunately, things have been a little chaotic since we found out. I stuck with macrobiotic eating until the last minute, sauteéing butternut squash in coconut oil as we left the house. I have brought all my macrobiotic foods that are portable. But when we reach our destination, we’ll be staying with family. It won’t be my kitchen, and I’ll need to eat what is served. Which is ok because I’m flexible. And so blessed to be
Living.

The words of the day are: patience, flexibility, and living. Go out & do it!
